When should you seek treatment from a root canal specialist in Dubai?

Consultation with an endodontist is necessary if you experience persistent tooth pain, especially if it worsens at night or when biting down. Sharp sensitivity to hot or cold stimuli that persists after contact indicates nerve inflammation. Also, do not delay visiting a specialist if you notice swelling of the gums or cheek near the problematic tooth.

Other signs indicating root canal issues include:

  • Darkening of the tooth after trauma
  • Increased sensitivity when chewing that lasts several days
  • Gum fistula
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth

Even if the sharp pain subsides on its own, it does not mean the problem is resolved — the inflammatory process may have become chronic. Do not wait for the condition to worsen; timely intervention will preserve the tooth and prevent complications. Regular check-ups help detect problems early.

Types of Endodontic Treatment

Root canal treatment can be primary or secondary.

Primary treatment is performed during the first visit when pulp inflammation is diagnosed. The procedure involves removing the nerve, mechanically cleaning the canals with special instruments, antiseptic rinsing, and tightly filling the canals. Modern techniques often use a microscope to thoroughly clean even the narrowest and curved canals.

Secondary or repeat endodontic treatment is required in cases such as:

  • Poor-quality previous fillings
  • Recurrence of inflammation

In such cases, the dentist removes the old filling material, re-treats and disinfects the canals. In complex situations, temporary filling with medicated paste may be applied for several months.

Procedure

Endodontics - 2

Primary treatment begins with diagnosis — examination and X-ray to assess the condition of the root canals. After anesthesia, the dentist isolates the tooth with a rubber dam to create a sterile environment. Then, they:

  • Carefully remove infected tissue from the canals
  • Treat the canals with antiseptic solutions
  • Fill them tightly with gutta-percha and sealer

Finally, the dentist places a temporary or permanent filling.

Secondary treatment is more complex — the old filling material is first removed. The canals are re-treated and disinfected, sometimes with medicated paste left inside for several days. After thorough cleaning, the canals are filled with new filling material.

Both types of treatment can be performed in one or multiple visits depending on the clinical situation. A control X-ray confirms the quality of the filling. In some cases, a crown is placed to protect the tooth from fracture. The dentist may also use posts and inlays.

Advantages of Endodontic Treatment

Endodontics - 3

The main benefit of endodontic intervention is the ability to save the natural tooth. It allows avoiding extraction even in cases of severe root canal inflammation. A preserved tooth:

  • Continues to participate in chewing
  • Maintains natural load on the bone
  • Prevents shifting of neighboring teeth

This is especially important for chewing teeth that experience significant load.

Root canal treatment eliminates the chronic source of infection in the body. The inflammation focus disappears after the procedure, which can negatively affect overall health. Modern antiseptic solutions and treatment methods ensure complete disinfection of the canals. Using a microscope increases procedural accuracy.

Endodontic treatment relieves pain and discomfort. After completing all stages, the patient forgets about constant pain during chewing and sensitivity to temperature. The restored tooth looks natural and indistinguishable from the others. High-quality filling materials ensure a hermetic seal of the canals.

Preserving the tooth is cheaper than subsequent prosthetics or implants. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and does not require long recovery. Most patients return to normal life the next day.

FAQ

Is root canal treatment painful?
Modern anesthesia methods make the procedure almost painless. During the dental manipulations, the patient does not feel any pain. After the procedure, mild discomfort may occur for 2-3 days, which can be easily relieved with over-the-counter painkillers. Severe pain is rare and usually indicates the need for a follow-up visit to the dentist.
How long does the root canal treatment take?
The standard treatment involves one or two visits: 1st visit — 120 minutes, 2nd visit — 90 minutes. If the case is complex, with curved canals or inflammation, 3-4 visits may be necessary. The duration largely depends on the number of roots in the tooth — molars take longer to treat than incisors.
Can I eat normally after root canal treatment?
After completing all treatment stages, you can return to normal eating. In the first few hours after the procedure, while anesthesia is still active, avoid hot foods and chewing on the side where the dentist worked. With a temporary filling, it is recommended to avoid sticky and hard foods that could damage it.
Do endodontists treat gum diseases?
Endodontists specialize in treating the pulp and root canals, not gum diseases. Periodontal issues are handled by periodontologists. However, inflammation of the tooth root can cause secondary gum problems, which resolve after successful endodontic treatment. In complex cases, collaboration between specialists may be required.
How do I know if I need a root canal?

Signs indicating problems include:

  • Persistent pain that worsens at night;
  • Sharp reaction to hot foods;
  • Swelling of the gum around the tooth;
  • Darkening of the tooth after trauma can also be a warning sign. However, an accurate diagnosis is made by a dentist after examination and X-ray.
What happens after root canal treatment?
A tooth without a nerve and blood supply becomes "dead" but continues to function. Over time, such teeth become more fragile and often require protection with a crown. Rare complications, such as inflammation requiring retreatment, can occur. Regular check-ups help detect issues early.
Is a crown necessary after root canal treatment?
Front teeth are often restored with composite materials, while molars usually require crowns. This protects the weakened tooth from breaking under load. The dentist decides based on the extent of destruction of the crown part.
Can I eat after root canal filling?
After placing a temporary filling, wait 1-2 hours until the material fully hardens. A permanent filling allows eating immediately after the procedure, but it is better to avoid chewing on that side during the first day. When a temporary crown is used, a gentle diet is recommended until the permanent restoration is fixed.
